The Italian born baritone, Renato Girolami, studied singing in Rome with Sesto Bruscantini. After receiving his degree in Concert Singing from the Musikhochschule in München, where he studied with Ernst Haefliger, he participated in master-classes in Berlin with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
After completing his studies at the Musikhochschule München he had his first professional engagements in Passau and Salzburg, followed by a five-year period as an ensemble member of Wiener Staatsoper and Volksoper, where his roles included Leporello in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, Belcore and Dulcamara, Don Magnifico, Taddeo in L’Italiana in Algeri, Schaunard in La Bohème, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly and Belfiore in Un Giorno di Regno.
Renato Girolami has been working as a freelance artist since 1996. In the summer 2007 he made his debut in the Salzburger Festspiele as Osmin in the new production of W.A. Mozart's Zaide which was televised on 3Sat. Other roles he has performed include, Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, the title role in Don Pasquale, Dulcamara in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore, Germont in Verdi's La traviata, Marcello in Puccini's La bohème and others.
Due to his vocal flexibility, the rapidity of his parlando passages, his natural recitatives as well as his versatile role portrayals, Renato Girolami has become known as a specialist in the W.A. Mozart and Rossini operas. In addition, his belcanto line and phrasing and the warmth of his vocal timbre have allowed him to confront roles such as Germont, Enrico and Sharpless with equal success. During his distinguished international career, he has sang his signature roles Don Magnifico, Bartolo, Don Geronio, Dulcamara, Melitone and Don Alfonso in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, in opera houses around the world, including Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Teatro la Fenice, Salzburger Festspiele, New National Theatre Tokyo, Opéra National du Rhin Strasbourg, Aaltotheater Essen, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Theater an der Wien, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, De Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, Opéra de Lille and Gothenburg Opera, as well as theaters in Hannover, Naples, Marseille, etc. At the Israeli Opera he has performed Mustafa in Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri.
Recently Renato Girolami sang Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore at Wiener Staatsoper, Don Pasquale (title role) at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Geronimo in Il matrimonio segreto at Oper Köln, Bartolo with Canadian Opera Company and Bayerische Staatsoper München, and Don Magnifico at Bayerische Staatsoper, Norwegian National Opera and Opéra de Lyon. His current and future engagements include Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Staatsoper Hamburg, Semperoper Dresden, and Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin, Don Geronio in Il turco in Italia at Oper Zürich, Melitone in La Forza del Destino at Oper Köln, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola Deutsche at Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf and Edinburgh International Festival, and Gianni Schicchi (title role) at Norwegian National Opera, Oslo.
His discography includes Leporello in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni as well as Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro for Naxos and Uberto in La Serva Padrona and Tracollo in Livietta e Tracollo for Bongiovanni.
