The American mezzo-soprano, Eve Gigliotti, is a graduate of The Manhattan School of Music, Mannes The New School for Music and The Curtis Institute of Music.
Quickly becoming known for her diverse repertoire ranging from George Frideric Handel to Wagner, Eve Gigliotti is an exciting artist who brings rich, resonant sound and a uniquely individual interpretation to her performances. She has a voice that been described as “spirited, handsome-toned” (Opera News), with a stage presence that is “strong” and “impassioned” (The Washington Post). She has performed with The Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Minnesota Opera, Odyssey Opera, and Opera Santa Barbara, Gotham Chamber Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Hawaii Opera, Ash Lawn Opera, among others.
Eve Gigliotti made her promising debut with the Metropolitan Opera as Mercedes in the Richard Eyre production of Georges Bizet's Carmen in the 2009-2010 season. In addition, she made her Avery Fisher Hall debut with American Symphony Orchestra in Scenes from Goethe’s Faust by Robert Schumann, and appeared with Oregon Symphony in Rossini’s Stabat Mater. She returned to the Met in 2010-2011 reprising the role of Mercedes and appearing as Siegrune in in Robert Lepage’s milestone production of Die Walküre, led by James Levine, broadcast worldwide in HD. Other past season highlights include in 2010-2011: Verdi’s Requiem with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop conducting; title role in L’italiana in Algeri with ABAO Opera Bilbao (Opera Berri Performance), Michele Mariotti conducting; Wolf Trap Opera as Giulietta in Les Contes d’Hoffmann.
Having won critical acclaim for her emotional portrayal as Ruth in the World Premiere of Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters, produced by Gotham Chamber Opera, Music Theater Group, and Opera Philadelphia, directed by Rebecca Taichman and conducted by Neal Goren, Eve Gigliotti has garnered attention for her interpretation within the new American repertoire. She was invited by Houston Grand Opera (East + West Festival) to originate the role of Mrs. Parvin in composer Gregory Spears’s, The Bricklayer. Other highlights of the 2011-2012 season included appearing with the Metropolitan Opera as Siegrune in Die Walküre under the baton of Fabio Luisi; making her Carnegie Hall debut in Leonard Bernstein’s Jeremiah Symphony No.1 with New York Youth Symphony, Ryan McAdams conducting; and returning to Carnegie Hall in portraying the title role of Djamileh with American Symphony Orchestra, Leon Botstein conducting. Her concert work during the season included Chanson Madècasses with Gotham Chamber Opera; and Stravinsky: Pairings (a performance of Alban Berg’s Seven Early Songs and Debussy’s Chansons de Bilitis) with Greenwich Music Festival.
Eve Gigliotti appeared as Siegrune in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Der Ring des Nibelungen (April-May 2013). Additional performances during the 2012-2013 season included the title role in an updated version of L’italiana in Algeri with Wendy Taucher Dance Theater Opera Project in Martha’s Vineyard, reprising a role she has performed with Opera Southwest and Bilbao ABAO (Opera Berri Performance). On the concert stage, she was seen with Carolina Chamber Music Festival, and Wolf Trap Opera in Recital, respectively. In recording, the recently released Opera America Songbook features Ms. Gigliotti performing “Archaeology,” a song written exclusively for her by acclaimed composer/librettist team David Little and Royce Vavrek.
Engagements during the 2013-2014 season included appearances Nazimova in Dream of Valentino with Minnesota Opera (March 2014), Cornelia in G.F. Handel's Giulio Cesare with Florentine Opera (March 2014), and Ruth in the World Premiere of Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters, produced by Gotham Chamber Opera, Music Theater Group, and Opera Philadelphia; and as the title role in Mascagni’s rarely performed Zanetto with Boston’s Odyssey Opera. She also joined the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra for Verdi’s Requiem. The 2014-2015 season brought significant company debuts for her, including Houston Grand Opera to sing Siegrune in Die Walküre (April-May 2015), Milwaukee Symphony, for G.F. Handel's Messiah, as well as Opera Santa Barbara to reprise the title role of Isabella in L’italiana in Algeri (March 2015). Additionally, she debuted the role of Bradamante in director R.B Schlather’s gallery installation of G.F. Handel's Alcina in association with Whitebox Art Center (September 2014), and concluded the season in her role debut as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly at Ash Lawn Opera (July 2015).
In the 2015-2016 season, Eve Gigliotti made her debut with Washington National Opera as Siegrune in Die Walküre (May 2016), and covering Flosshilde and the Second Norn in their Der Ring des Nibelungen. She appeared as The Doctor in the critically acclaimed world premiere of Keeril Makan’s operatic treatment of Persona, produced by Beth Morrison Projects; and performed with The Princeton Festival as Auntie in Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes (June 2016). In the 2016-2017 season, she returned to Opera Philadelphia to originate the role of Dodo in the world premiere of Breaking the Waves (September-October 2016), written by composer/librettist team Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek, with further performances at New York’s Prototype Festival; as well as premiering a new oratorio, Al-Quds: Jerusalem by Mohammed Fairouz commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Other engagements include Giulietta in Les Contes d’Hoffmann with Hawaii Opera Theater (April 2017); and Carmen (covering the title role) with Lyric Opera of Chicago.
A passionate interpreter of new American opera and vocal chamber music, Eve Gigliotti has premiered the roles of Ruth in Dark Sisters by Nico Muhly (Gotham Chamber Opera and Opera Philadelphia); The Mother in The Bricklayer by Greg Spears (HGOco); Yoani Songs, a song cycle by Paola Prestini (Bay Chamber Music Festival); and “Archaeology,” a song written exclusively for her by acclaimed composer/librettist team David Little and Royce Vavrek featured in the Opera America Songbook.
