Jon Garrison (Tenor)

Born: December 11, 1944 - Higginsville, Missouri, USA

A favourite of many of the world’s most distinguished conductors, American tenor Jon Garrison is acclaimed among the operatic and concert ensembles of the Metropolitan Opera, Hamburg Opera, Lyons Opera, l’Opera de Montreal, the opera companies of Cincinnati, Cleveland, Miami, Ft. Worth, New York City, San Diego, Pittsburgh, and Washington and such renowned orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Performances in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 included the role of Pedro in MacMillan’s opera Inés de Castro with the Scottish Opera, concerts and CD recordings of Igor Markevitch’s Le Paradis Perdu with the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra, a Pops concert and Verdi’s Rigoletto at the "Music from Bear Valley" Festival, "A Viennese Night" with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra with Macal conducting, appearances at the Prague Autumn International Music Festival in both Rossini’s Stabat Mater and in Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, L.v. Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Baltimore Symphony, a return to Carnegie Hall in George Frideric Handel’s Israel in Egypt and to the Metropolitan Opera in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, as Laca in Jenufa with Alabama Symphony, as von Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus with Syracuse Opera, Verdi's Requiem with Pensacola Symphony, and Ezra Landerman's Brotherly Love with the Philadelphia Singers. In the 2000-2001 season, he was re-engaged by Scottish Opera for a revival of Ines de Symphony Orchestra, at the Proms in 1997, the role of Deportes in ENO’s production of Die Soldaten, the role of Castro in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Porto, Portugal. Additional engagements in the present season include Mozart’s Requiem with Jacksonville Symphony, John Garrison’s debut in the role of Cavardossi in Tosca with Opera NJ, Igor Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with Kansas City Symphony and New Texas Music Works, L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Lima Symphony and Missa Solemnis with Evansville Philharmonic, L.v. Beethoven’s Fidelio with Florida Philharmonic and G.F. Handel’s Messiah with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Jon Garrison is a frequent performer at the Metropolitan Opera having sung the roles of Cassio in Otello, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and Ottavio in Don Giovanni. He has sung the role of Lensky in the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s concert version of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, received rave reviews for his "stunning" performance in the title role of The Rake’s Progress with the Berkshire Opera and performed the world premieres of Stewart Copeland’s Holy Blood, Crescent Moon (Cleveland Opera), Jay Reise’s Rasputin (New York City Opera), and Hugo Weisgall’s The Gardens of Adonis (Opera Omaha).

European engagements since 96/97 include the title roles in both Idomeneo with the Garsington Opera in Surrey, England, as well as Birtwhistle’s Mask of Orpheus with the BBC Adolar in Weber’s Euryanthe with the Orchestra of the Enlightenment in London, Elijah at the Prague Autumn International Music Festival, and Lobgesang with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon.

Orchestral engagements included Fidelio with Jesús López-Cobos and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, a tribute to Gian Carlo Menotti with the Little Orchestra Society at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, I. Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the San Jose Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra with Christoph von Dohnányi conducting, Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde at the Colorado Mahlerfest, Sergei Rachmaninov’s The Bells with the Ft. Wayne Philharmonic, L.v. Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis at Carnegie Hall with the St. Cecilia Chorus, Verdi’s Requiem with the Buffalo Philharmonic, Johannes BrahmsRinaldo with the Singer’s Club, Claude Baker’s Into the Sun with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Henze’s Elegy for Young Lovers with the London Sinfonietta, his Kammermusik with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Arnold Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder with Minnesota Orchestra, Das Lied von der Erde with Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Sheng’s Songs of Majnun for New York Chamber Symphony, Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass at the Grant Park Music Festival, Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem with the Oregon, Kansas City and Spokane Symphonies.

Jon Garrison sang and recorded A. Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder on the occasion of the farewell performances of Zubin Mehta’s tenure with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Other recordings include Szymanowski’s Symphony No. 3 under the baton of Simon Rattle, and the Evangelist in St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with Raymond Leppard conducting, both for EMI, the Rake’s Progress and Oedipus Rex on the MusicMasters label, and G.F. Handel’s Roman Vespers for RCA. His newest CD recording is being released on Newport Classics.
