The Argentinean baritone, Luciano Garay, received his vocal training at the Provincial Conservatory of Music “Luis Gianneo” in his home town Mar del Plata, at the Instituto Superior de Arte at the Colón Theatre in Buenos Aires, and at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in the City of Karlsruhe, Germany. In Buenos Aires he received additional training with Argentinian singer Lucía Boero and was selected to participate in the master-classes of soprano Heather Harper (England) and the tenors Ernst Haefliger (Switzerland) and Aldo Baldin (Germany). In Europe, he continued to perfect his voice with maestros Hilde Zadek, Peter Nelson, and Hartmut Höll, the famed soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and the legendary Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in master-classes on vocal technique and musical interpretation. He was awarded scholarships by the following entities: Musical Festivals of Buenos Aires, the Chamber Music Foundation, the Leonor Hirsch Foundation , and the May Bank Foundation.
The Colón Theatre of Buenos Aires selected Luciano Garay as its representative at the Concurso Internacional Mozart during the year 1990, in the Cities of Venice, Prague, and Munich. In the year 1992 he won the Pavarotti International during the National preliminaries at the Colón Theatre, travelling then to the City of Philadelphia, where the Finals took place. He has also participated in the III Concurso Bienal Juvenil Shell 95/96, obtaining the First Prize in the vocal category. In 1992 he received the Sea Star Award for his interpretation of Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Luciano Garay has sung the main roles for baritone in the Operas Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), Cosí fan tutte, Bastien et Bastienne, by Mozart, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Don Carlo, Joan of Arc by Verdi, La Bohème and Madama Butterfly by Puccini, The Barber of Seville by Rossini, Pimpinone by Georg Philipp Telemann, Dido and Eneas by Purcell, Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Carmen by Georges Bizet, Pelléas and Mélisande by Debussy, Tannhäuser by Wagner, Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, Mahagonny by Weill, Arlechinatta by Salieri, Fidelio by L.v. Beethoven, Il maestro di capella (The Chapel Master) by Cimarosa, the cantata escénica in Carmina Burana, and the Operetta Orpheus im der Unterwelt by Offenbach.
Luciano Garay’s chamber nusic repertoire includes interpretations of the songs and cycles of the most important composers of this genre in many theatres of the country and abroad, among them: Colón Theatre of Buenos Aires , International Festival in Blonay (Switzerland), International Festival of Llao- Llao, Bariloche (Argentina), Argentino Theatre of La Plata, as well as in the Embassies of Switzerland, Germany, and the USA, the San Martín Theatre in Buenos Aires, and the Metropolitan Theatre of Medellín, Colombia, the Schloss Gottesaue in Karlsruhe (Germany), and the Teatro Municipal de Santiago (Chile), among other venues.
Luciano Garay has has recorded the cycle "Vier ernste Gesänge" and other Llieder by Johannes Brahms for the Radio Suisse Romande at the Church of the Chiésaz in Blonay (Switzerland), the first registration in CD of the Martín Fierro Cantata by Juan José Castro for Santa Fé Records. He has also recorded the disc Misión San Francisco Javier for the record label K.617/ Les Chemins du Baroque in San Javier (Bolivia), under the baton of Maestro Gabriel Garrido.
Since his debut at the Colón Theatre of Buenos Aires in 1992, Luciano Garay has participated in productions of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia; Verdi’s Rigoletto, Attila and Macbeth, Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges, Panizza’s Aurora, Debussy’s Pelléas et Méllisande, Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt (The Dead City), Menotti’s The Consul, Strauss’ Salomé, Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Arthur Honegger’s Joan of Arc at the Stake, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and La Fanciulla del West, Luigi Dallapiccola’s Il prisionero (The Prisoner), Gandini’s Liederkreis, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolda, Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini, Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffman, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Lehar’s The Merry Widow, Weill’s Mahagonny, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, among others.
Luciano Garay’s engagements for this year (2010-2011) include performances in La Bohéme, Madama Butterfly Don Giovanni, Carmen, I Pagliacci, Alberto Ginastera’s Bomarzo, D’Espósito’s Lin Calel, and Ullman’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis. |
