The English soprano, Sarah Fox, was educated at the Giggleswick School and read Music at Royal Holloway, University of London, obtaining her Bachelor of Music degree in 1995. She went on to study for Postgraduate Diploma in Vocal studies at the Royal College of Music with Margaret Kingsley with scholarships from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and the Musicans' Benevolent Fund. She was a major prize-winner at the RCM, held the 1997 Thomas Allen Opera Scholarship and was the winner of the 1998 Queen Elizabeth Rose Bowl - one of the College's most prestigious awards. She now studies with Paul Farrington. She won the Kathleen Ferrier Award in 1997 and the John Christie Award from Glyndebourne in 2000. She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Royal Holloway in May 2012.
In demand as a recitalist, Sarah Fox made her Wigmore Hall debut with Roger Vignoles in 1998 and has worked with Piers Lane, the Nash Ensemble and on several occasions with Malcolm Martineau including Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch at St John's, Smith Square.
Her concert work has taken her to venues throughout the country, Europe, and the USA, including Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony and Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah at Kings College, Cambridge; George Frideric Handel's Messiah at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, and for the Florida Philharmonic, and G. Mahler's Eighth Symphony at the Royal Albert Hall. She has performed with many of Britain's leading orchestras, including W.A. Mozart's Il Re Pastore with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass (BWV 232) with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment; Messiah with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; Haydn's Creation with the Philharmonia Orchestra; W.A. Mozart's Mass in C Minor with Sir Charles Mackerras and The Hanover Band and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music with Leonard Slatkin and the BBC Symphony Orchestra the First Night of the Proms. During the early 2000’s she toured Israel with the Israel Camerata Orchestra Jerusalem in both Boccherini's and D'Astorga's Stabat Mater and performed Iphis in G.F. Handel's Jeptha with Sir Charles Mackerras at the Edinburgh Festival.
Sarah Fox has an extensive concert repertoire and has been particularly associated with the British Broadcasting Corporation, The Bach Choir and the King's College Choir Cambridge. She has also performed abroad with many of the world's leading orchestras including the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Berliner Philharmoniker and Minnesota Orchestra. In 2009 she performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2; toured throughout Europe and the USA in G.F. Handel's Athalia with Ivor Bolton and the Concerto Köln; and sang in G.F. Handel's Acis and Galatea with the Gabrieli Consort at the Beaune Festival. She also starred in the BBC MGM Prom with Sir Thomas Allen, Seth Macfarlane, John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra in 2009. She appeared once again at The Proms in 2011, with the John Wilson orchestra and stars of musical theatre.
In 2000, Sarah Fox made her debut for the Glyndebourne Festival as Karolka in Jenufa, returning in 2002 as Zerlina in Don Giovanni and in 2003 as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro. Of her Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro at the Glyndebourne Festival Barbarina Diana, writing in Il giornale della musica desciribed her performance at Glyndebourne as "a delight for the eye and heart, whose voice, fresh and crystal clear is blessed with a rare beauty accompanied by a strong musicality: 'Deh vieni' interpreted without affectation, directed to her beloved, takes your breath away". With Glyndebourne on tour she has sung Marzelline in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio and Miss Wordsworth in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring. In 2004, she made her debut with the Royal Opera Covent Garden as Woglinde in Das Rheingold, returning to the house in 2005 as Waldvogel in Siegfried and in 2006 as Woglinde in Götterdämmerung. In 2007 she sang Zerlina in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and Woglinde in Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung; in 2008, Lucy Lockitt in The Beggars Opera and in 2009, Asteria in George Frideric Handel's Tamerlano. She has also sang Hyacinthus in W.A. Mozart's Apollo et Hyacinthus and Rosina in La Finta Semplice, and has performed with Sir Thomas Allen at an Opera Gala in London's Mansion House. Further British engagements include Ann Page in Sir John in Love with English National Opera, Merab in Saul, Musetta and Mimi in La Bohème with Opera North, and Servilia in La clemenza di Tito with Welsh National Opera. At the Edinburgh Festival, her roles have included Iphis in Jephtha and Cleofide in Poro.
Sarah Fox made her international debut as Ilia in Idomeneo with De Vlaamse Opera. In 2005, she made her debut with the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich as Michal in Saul, returning to the house in 2006 as Eurydice in Orphée et Eurydice. In 2008 and 2009, she sang Asteria in G.F. Handel's Tamerlano. She was scheduled to revive the role opposite Plácido Domingo at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in 2011.She made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2005 as Second Niece in Peter Grimes and returned to the Festival in 2007 as Woglinde in Das Rheingold. Further European engagements include Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro for the Royal Danish Opera, Arianna in G.F. Handel’s Arianna in Creta for the Nationale Reisoper and Karolka in Jenufa at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 2004, she made her North American debut as Zerlina in Don Giovanni at the Cincinnati Opera. Her operatic career has included collaborations with numerous prominent conductors, including: Harry Bicket, Sir Ivor Bolton, Emmanuelle Haïm, Louis Langree, Sir Charles Mackerras, Antonio Pappano, Sir Simon Rattle and Mark Wigglesworth.
Her recordings include Woglinde ïî Das Rheingold with the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle; Antonio Vivaldi Sacred Music with the King's College Choir Cambridge for ; Songs by Cecil Cole with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Martyn Brabbins for Hyperion; Boccherini's Stabat Mater with The King’s Consort for Hyperion; Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Christmas Music with the City of London Sinfonia under the baton of Sir Richard Hickox for Chandos; and Zweiter Dame in Die Zauberflote with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sir Charles Mackerras, also for Chandos.
Future plans include Zerlina in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and Woglinde Der Ring des Niebelungen for the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Woglinde at the Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg festivals and Asteria Tamerlano for the Bayerische Staatsoper Munchen. |
