Mary Feminear (Soprano)

Born: Auburn, Alabama, USA

The American soprano, Mary Feminear, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice and Opera from the Juilliard School (2005-2009); her Master of Arts degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, with an academic focus on music education, vocal pedagogy, and voice disorders (2010-2012); and her Artist Diploma in Opera Studies, Voice and Opera from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Marlena Malas (2012-2014). She was a recipient of the Jerome L. Greene Scholarship and the Hardesty & Beverley Peck Johnson Fund.

Mary Feminear, described as having a “luminous soprano full of longing and sensual promise" (Wall Street Journal), is enjoying a career both in Europe and in the USA. In August 2012, she performed as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier at the Chautauqua Music Festival. Other opera credits include Abigail Williams in The Crucible; Susanna in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro; Constance Fletcher in The Mother of Us All; and Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi. She has performed in recitals in affiliation with Wednesday at One in Alice Tully Hall, The Leschetizky Foundation, and Teachers College, Columbia University. In recent seasons she has performed in Gotham Chamber Opera’s production of La Déscente d’Orphée aux Enfers and in the role of Polissena in George Frideric Handel's Radamisto under the baton of Julian Wachner and director James Darrah. She also appeared as Maria Maddalena in G.F. Handel's La Resurrezione, conducted by William Christie, and in J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Alice Tully Hall with Gary Thor Wedow conducting.

In the 2014-2015 season, Mary Feminear appeared as Pamina in the Pacific MusicWorks production of The Magic Flute, conducted by Stephen Stubbs. She also made her Seattle Opera debut in the title role of G.F. Handel's Semele, conducted by Gary Thor Wedow. In the 2015-2016 season she sang the role of Semele at Opera Omaha with director James Darrah and conductor Stephen Stubbs; she was also seen as Helena in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Papagena in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute in Geneva. In the 2016-2017 season she will return to the Grand Théâtre de Genève as a member of the Troupe des jeunes solistes en résidence, where she will sing Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème, Mimì in the Scènes de la Vie de Bohème, Amore in Cavalli's Il Giasone, Agnès Sorel in Tchaikovsky's Orleanskaya Deva and other roles.
