The Swedish soprano, Ida Falk Winland, was born into a family of musicians, and began studying cello and piano at the age of 10. Her formal singing lessons began at the age of 16 and it soon became clear that making music, singing and performing were going to be her main goals in life. In 2002 she was awarded a place on the undergraduate course at the Royal College of Music in London, graduating with Bachelor of Music degree (2002-2006). She was taught there by Margaret Cable, Marie McLaughlin and from 2004, Lillian Watson. Miss Watson in particular has been a huge influence upon her early career and she developed hugely under her support and guidance. She continued her studies with Lillian Watson having been offered a scholarship at the Benjamin Britten International Opera School of the (Royal College of Music) (2006-2008), and at the National Opera Studio, where she was awarded the Tagore gold medal. She has had the opportunity to sing in master-classes for musicians including Malcolm Martineau, Michael Chance, Jane Manning, Roger Vignoles, Dame Malvina Major, Sarah Walker, David Owen Norris, Robin Bowman and Laura Sartri.
Her Awards and Scholarships include: Lies Askonas Vocal Competition - First Prize (2005); Thelma King Award for Singers - Second Prize (2006); Royal College of Music Scholarship (2002-2008); Swedish Mason Music Scholarship (2006); Swedish Academy of Music - Award for Singers (2006); Joel Berglund Scholarship (2006); Yamaha Music Foundation Scholarship (2007). She also received the Song Prize at the 2008 Kathleen Ferrier Awards and both the audience prize and the Prize of the ‘Ville de Nîmes’ at the Régine Crespin competition in 2011.
Ida Falk Winland’s operatic roles include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Helsinki Festival; Cecily in Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Opéra national de Lorraine; Pamina in Die Zauberflöte for the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, Cunégonde in Candide at Opera National de Lorraine; her Teatro alla Scala Milan debut as First Niece in Peter Grimes under Robin Ticciati; Laoula in Chabrier’s L’étoile for Den Nye Opera in Bergen; Romilda in Xerxes for the Royal Swedish Opera; Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia; she made her Glyndebourne Festival Opera debut as the Dew Fairy in Hänsel und Gretel; she made her first appearance at Gothenburg Opera as Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare; She sang there the role of Morgana in Alcina under Laurence Cummings; in the 2012-2013 season she played Rosina in The Barber of Seville. She has been engaged by the Göteborg Opera for a five-year period starting with the 2013-2014 season.
Following her studies, Ida Falk Winland had some fantastic musical experiences including a performance of J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) with Peter Schreier, concerts with the Swedish National Orchestra (Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra), and this summer had the opportunity to tour Asia (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan) with the Asian Youth Orchestra. Her next challenges involved performances with Sir Charles Mackerras and also the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Okko Kamu. She has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, including Orchestre National de Paris under the direction of Sofi Jeannin, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and Daniel Harding; the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under Sakari Oramo; the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under Gustavo Dudamel; the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro La Fenice under Marc Minkowski; and Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She recently toured performing J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) with Arcangelo, the chamber music ensemble, under the direction of Jonathan Cohen.
On CD Ida Falk Winland can be heard in J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) under the baton of Jonathan Cohen (Hyperion Records), Haydn’s The Creation with Philipp von Steinaecker (Fra Bernardo) and on her first solo CD with songs by Copland, Nystroem and R. Strauss.
