One could say that the German bass-baritone, Martin Egel, was predestined for a musical career from birth. His highly talented parents - is mother is the singer Marga Höffgen and his father the conductor Theodor Egel - guided the young baritone carefully but resolutely in the direction of a musical future and, following his musical studies in Frankfurt and Basel, it was not long before Martin Egel began his career on the concert platform.
Martin Egel's debut: Elias. But, given his acting as well as musical talents, it was natural that he should also be attracted to the opera stage. His first part was the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Basel Theatre.
Martin Egel’s feeling for language, his dramatic power of expression and his extraordinary musicality ensured that the baritone was very soon in great demand in the international world of music. To mention but the main stages of his career: performer at the Bayreuth Festival since 1975; Lieder recitals; concert and opera guest appearances at the Easter Festival in Salzburg, the Munich Opera Festival, the Schwetzinger Festival, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Tonhalle in Zürich, the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, The Teatro Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, the RAI Roma, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Festival Orange, the Festival Aix-en-Provence and the Opéra Monte Carlo.
In addition to many television productions, the recording world also discovered Martin Egel's artistic talents at an early stage. Testimony of this is to be found in numerous recordings of Lieder, concerts, oratorios and operas. Furthermore, the great conductors of our time - including Daniel Barenboim, Karl Böhm, Pierre Boulez, Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti and Horst Stein - have called upon the services of the bass-baritone. |
