The Austrian baritone, Peter Edelmann, began his musical studies with his father, renowned opera basso Otto Edelmann, at the Vienna Musikhochschule. After four years he graduated with honors in voice, concentrating in lieder and opera studies. In 1989, he won First Prize and the Mozart Prize at the International Belvedere Competition in Vienna, as well as six special awards. Concert appearances followed in Budapest, Vienna, Bozen, Salzburg and the Wexford Opera Festival in Ireland.
In December 1989, Peter Edelmann made his debut with the Hamburg State Opera and has been a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin since 1990, singing many major opera roles like Papageno, Wolfram, Valentin, Marcello, Figaro and Guglielmo. His lieder recitals have taken him to Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Japan and the USA. Since 1990 he has appeared regularly at the Newport Music Festival (USA).
Guest appearances have taken Peter Edelmann to the Dresdner Staatsoper, the Munich Opera, the Wiener Volksoper - Wiener Staatsoper, the Graz Opera and the Mörbisch Operetta Festival (Danilo, Eisenstein and Count Homonay). He has made many recordings for television, video and CD. His last is a duet CD with brother Paul-Armin on the Arte Nova label. Other engagements have taken him to Paris (Phorbas in Oedipe), the Zürich Opera (Danilo in The Merry Widow), Las Palmas-Spain, Tokyo (Wolfram in Tannhäuser), the Stockholm Royal Opera (Wolfram), the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv (Papageno), the Music Festival San Sebastian (Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus) and the Opera Royale de Wallonie at Liège (Guglielmo and Dottore Malatesta), and has appeared with conductors such as Lawrence Foster, Friedemann Layer, Jaques Delacote, Christian Thielemann, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jiri Kout, Bruno Weil, Ralph Weikert, Leopold Hager, Franz Welser-Möst and John Eliot Gardiner as well as stage directors such as Götz Friedrich, Günther Krämer, Helmut Mathiasek and Willy Decker.
Lately, Peter Edelmann appeared at the Macau Music Festival (Carmina burana and Papageno), at the Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels (Recital with brother Paul-Armin), at the Prague National Opera (Melot in Tristan), in Madrid (St. Matthews Passion (BWV 244)), in Berlin (Papageno and Wolfram),Oneguin (Seattle), Neaples (Orest in Elektra), Wahington Opera (Falke),Volksoper in Vienna (Zar and Danilo), Tel Aviv (Danilo), San Diego (Eisenstein) and Nancy (Faninal). |
