During 2007 the European Brandenburg Ensemble (= EBE) toured Europe and the Far East, performing to packed houses and attracting critical acclaim. In November 2007 the 60th birthday celebrations climaxed with a final performance of the concertos in London’s Cadogan Hall and the launch of the Brandenburg Concertos recording on Avie Records. Leading players of European orchestras such as The English Concert, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Il Giardino Armonico have pledged time to work in this unique and remarkable international formation.
On December 16, 2007, the eagerly awaited performance of J.S. Bach’s six Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046-1051) by Trevor Pinnock and the EBE took place in the magnificently restored Sheffield City Hall, Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall. The concert was in celebration of Trevor Pinnock’s 60th Birthday and also launched the Ensemble’s tour of Europe and the Far East.
This landmark cultural event was a culmination of 18 months’ planning and partnership between South Yorkshire’s arts and business communities. Trevor Pinnock is not by any means ‘Yorkshire born and bred’. However, since his first visit to Sheffield in 1985 he has developed a special affinity with the city. He is closely associated with chamber music promoters Music in the Round and Artistic Director Peter Cropper and in 2005 he received an honorary degree from the University of Sheffield. For this reason he chose to celebrate his 60th birthday in the city. A 1,380 strong audience from across the UK enjoyed the City Hall performance and what local commentators described as ‘Pinnock’s winning way with the Brandenburgs’.
In November the recording won the Baroque Instrumental Gramophone Award 2008. |
