The Austrian soprano, Laurence Dutoit, was a regular performer at the Vienna State Opera from the late 1950’s to the early 1970’s. She also appeared on a number of occasions at the Vienna Singakademie. In 1958 she performed in Vienna in Werner Egk’s Irische Legende, a performance conducted by the composer. The following year she sang at the Vienna Singakademie in George Frideric Handel’s Solomon under Beecham’s direction and also sang in the same composer’s Israel in Egypt in a performance conducted by Hermann Scherchen.
At the 1962 Salzburg Festival Laurence Dutoit appeared in Herbert von Karajan’s production of Il Trovatore, singing the role of Ines. She also appeared at the Vienna State Opera in 1964 under Herbert von Karajan’s direction in Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten and in 1972 sang the role of the Second Virgin in Cherubini’s Medea under Horst Stein, again in Vienna. She also performed with Leonard Bernstein.
Laurence Dutoit's J.S. Bach recordings consist of the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), Easter Oratorio (BWV 249), Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and the Cantatas BWV 140 and BWV 4. Her other recordings include Schubert’s Messe Nr.4 C-dur (D 452), Cherubini’s Medea, Verdi’s Il Trovatore (as Ines), Einem’s Der Besuch der alten Dame, and Mozart’s Regina Coeli in C major (K 276).
