Thomas Dewald (Tenor)

Born: 1960 - Losheim, Germany

The German tenor, Thomas Dewald, passed his church music exam, then began Vocal Studies and graduated Cum Laude at the University of Music Saarland. His career started with winning various important prizes, e.g.: International Belvedère Opera Singer Award Vienna, 1st Prize Bundeswettbewerb Gesang Berlin; Laureate of the Concours Intern, De Chant in s'Hertogenbosch, and Laureate of the Walter Gruner Song Competition in London.

Those awards were followed by national and international appearances - in Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Luxembourg, Amsterdam, Antwerpen, Kopenhagen, Helsinki, London, Paris, Vienna, Bregenz, Genf, Milan, Turin, Palermo, Sevilla, Valencia, Rio de Janeiro, Bukarest, Danzig, and Königsberg. Thomas Dewald also participated in many festivals in Germany, Italy, the UK, Finland, Luxembourg, Spain, Russia and Poland: Berliner Festwochen, Musikfestival in Rheingau, Musik Triennale in Cologne, Lucerne Festival, Schumann-Fest in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt-Feste, Händelfestspiele in Halle, Göttingen and Karlsruhe, Bodensee-Festival, Flandern Festival, Music Week in Perugia, Festival St. Denis in Paris, Festival de Musica de Canarias, International Opera Festival in Buxton, Internationales Bachfest Schaffhausen, and Mozart-Tage in Luzern. He was engaged at various theatres and operas, including the Hamburg State Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Mannheim National Theatre, Karlsruhe State Theatre, Mainz State Theatre, Saarländ State Theatre, Freiburg City Theatre, Zürich Opera, Brussels Royal Theatre, Gent Royal Opera.

Thomas Dewald's parts include amongst others: Tamino in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute, the leading part in W.A. Mozart's Idomeneo, Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, Ernesto in Donizetti's Don Pasquale, Amenofe in Donizetti's Mose, Lenski in Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin, Boris in Janacek's Katja Kabanova, Lucullus in Brecht/Paul Dessau's The Trial Of Lucullus.

Thomas Dewald has collaborated with famous orchestras under the direction of conductors such as Charles Dutoit, Horst Stein, Nello Santi, Gerd Albrecht, Leopold Hager, Sylvain Cambreling, Hartmut Haenchen, Andrew Parrott, Heinz Holliger, and Ingo Metzmacher.

Numerous national and international radio and television productions prove the versatile tenor's talent. Records and CD's were released by labels such as Orfeo, Capriccio, Wergo, Teldec, Motette, Arte Nova and Opus 111.

Thomas Dewald was appointed by the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as Professor for Vocals in 1995. Among the singers who have studied with him and/or attended his master-classes: Simon Amend (Baritone), David Jakob Schläger (Tenor).

In 2006 Thomas joined the TSR (True Symphonic Rockestra) to be one of the 3 Rock Tenors together with world-famous rock vocalist James LaBrie from Dream Theater and opera award winning ucrainian star tenor Vladimir Grishko, directed by the young & upcoming rock producer Dirk Ulrich for Brainworx/Germany and Marinsound/Russia.
