The German mezzo-soprano, Daniela Denschlag, initially studied biology but early decided on a vocal career. She received her first singing instruction with Dieter Heistermann in Mannheim, before she took up studies at the Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Heidelberg-Mannheim with Professor Doris Denzler. In 1996 she began studies at the Mannheim Musikhochschule with Bryn Terfel and Rudolf Piernay, who has taught her since then. She also attrended master-classes with Anna Reynolds, Daniel Ferro, Geoffrey Parsons und Christa Ludwig and in 1996 won the 3rd prize at the Mannheimer Kammermusikwettbewerb.
Daniela Denschlag made her opera debut as the 3rd Elfe in Dvorák's Rusalka at the Heidelberger Schlofestspielen of 1997. Afterwards she appeared at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, at the Ludwigshafener Pfalzbau, as well as at the Theater Baden-Baden in Maurice Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges and B. Britten's Albert Herring. As a soloist she sang with the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and the Neuen Lausitzer Philharmonie. Concert tours led her to England, France, Spain and Israel. She made her debut as an ensemble member of the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 1999-2000 season in the roles of Erda and Floßhilde in Rheingold and Schwertleite in Walküre. She also sang at this opera house Hänsel (Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel), Czipra (Der Zigeunerbaron) as well as Ramiro (W.A. Mozart's La finta giardiniera). After that invitations to the Bremen, Lyon, Paris and Stuttgart opera houses immediately followed.
Since the 2002-2003 season Daniela Denschlag has been an ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera. Her debut at this opera house was as 3rd Dame (W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte) in September 2002. It was followed by Erste Norn and Floßhilde (Götterdämmerung), Barena (Jenufa), Page (Salome), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi) und Erda (Das Rheingold/Siegfried). In the 2004-2005 season she could be heard as Mary (Der Fliegende Holländer), Madelon (Andrea Chénier) and Brigitta (Die tote Stadt); in 2005-2006 season in roles as 3rd Dame, Sphinx (Oedipe), Gräfin Geschwitz (Alban Berg's Lulu), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier), Madelon (André Chénier), Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde) and Suzuki (Madama Butterfly). In 2006-2007 she is scheduled to appear as Ninetta (I vespri siciliani), Auntie (Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes), 3rd Dame (Die Zauberflöte), Adelaide (premiere production of Arabella), Marcellina (W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier), Marquise de Berkenfield (premiere production of La Fille du régiment), Gaea (Daphne) and Schenkenwirtin (Premierenproduktion Boris Godunov).
As a guest artist Daniela Denschlag has appeared at the Opéra National de Lyon, the Châtelet in Paris, in Philadelphia (Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos), at the the Cologne Opera (Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen), the Opéra du Rhin (Arabella), the Stuttgart Staatstheater (Annina in Der Rosenkavalier), as well as at the Hamburg Staatsoper and at the Baden-Baden Festival House.
