The American baritone, Matthew J. Daniels, obtained his Associate in Arts degree Indian River Community College; his Bachelor of Music & Master of Arts degree from Florida Atlantic University; and his the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Louisiana State University, where he studied with Dr. Loraine Sims. In 2001 he attended Manhattan School of Music as a student of the late Met Opera baritone, Theodor Uppman.
Matthew Daniels is Director of Music at Bishop Foley Catholic High School and Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Michigan. Most recently, he served on the voice faculties of University of Michigan-Flint, Eastern Michigan University, Madonna University, and Spring Arbor University. During 2016-2017, he was Assistant Professor of Voice at Mississippi State University, and prior to attending LSU as a doctoral teaching assistant, he was an adjunct instructor of voice at Florida Atlantic University and Indian River State College. Furthermore, he has directed high school and church music programs in Michigan, Florida, and Louisiana.
Equally comfortable in a variety of musical styles, Matthew Daniels has sung leading roles in both opera and musical theatre, and he is an avid performer of concert and recital work. Leading roles in opera, operetta, and musical theatre include the following: W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte (Guglielmo), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro), W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute (Papageno), La Bohème (Marcello), Rigoletto (Rigoletto), W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (Il Conte di Almaviva), Amahl and Night Visitors (Balthazar), W.A. Mozart's Der Schauspieldirektor (Buff), The New Moon (Robert), The Mikado (Pooh-bah), Godspell (Jesus), Camelot (Lancelot), South Pacific (Emil), Man of La Mancha (Cervantes/Don Quixote), A Grand Night for Singing (Leading Man), and Cole! (Leading Man). Additionally, he has appeared as baritone soloist in numerous major works: W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass, Johannes Brahms' Requiem, W.A. Mozart's Requiem, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, Gabriel Fauré;s Requiem, Dubois' Seven Last Words of Christ, Rutter Mass of the Children, and Ralph Vaughan-Williams' Five Mystical Songs. Recent engagements include The Mikado (Pooh-bah and stage director) with University of Michigan-Flint, Amahl & the Night Visitors (Melchior) with Madonna University, baritone soloist for L.v. Beethoven's Mass in C with the UMS Choral Union "Summer Sing" concert series at Hill Auditorium conducted by Scott Hanoian, and AGMA Chorus with Detroit Opera (formerly Michigan Opera Theatre). Forthcoming engagements include Charles Gounod's Faust (Chorus, AGMA, 2022) and Aida (Chorus, AGMA, 2022) with Detroit Opera as well as Messiah soloist with Florida Atlantic University (2022).
In addition to topics in vocal pedagogy, Matthew Daniels' research interests are steeped in the music of David P. Rossow, dear friend and subject of his doctoral dissertation. He recently presented his research on Rossow's songs at the 31st CMS Pacific Northwest Regional Conference in Pullman, Washington, the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT2017) in Stockholm, Sweden, and the 41st Southern Region NATS Conference in Arkadelphia, Arizona. He recently joined forces with additional musicians/friends to record "Bells In Tower At Evening Toll" - a full-length album featuring the oeuvre of Rossow's songs for voice and piano to-date, which was produced and released by the Wisdom Recordings Label.
Outside of teaching and research, Matthew Daniels is an avid composer of contemporary sacred music. He has numerous titles published with International Liturgy Publications and Simply Liturgical Music. |
