The American counter-tenor and composer, Marshall Coid, studied at the Babylon Junior - Senior High School and BHS. He received his formal musical training at The Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he attended both the Pre-College and College Divisions, graduating in 1979.
Critical acclaim has followed Marshall Coid in his multi-faceted career as counter-tenor, violinist, actor and composer. He has performed nationally and internationally, garnering praise from numerous publications including the New York Times, New York Magazine, Strad Magazine, American Record Guide, Opera News, The New Music Connoisseur, and The Washington Post. As a concert soloist he has performed at Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, St. John the Divine, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters, MOMA and The United Nations in New York City, The National Cathedral and The Smithsonian Museum and Library of Congress in Washington D.C., The Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina and the International Performers‘ Festival in Belgium.
Marshall Coid'’s concert repertoire includes The Roasting Swan in Orff’s Carmina Burana, which he has performed with several orchestras including, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, North Arkansas Symphony and Harrisburg Symphony, Soprano/Alto Soloist in George Frideric Handel’s Belshezar with Händel Choir of Baltimore, Alto soloist in G.F. Handel’s Messiah and Counter-tenor soloist in Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the Camerata Singers in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Alto/Soprano soloist in Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C., and the alto soloist in Igor Stravinsky’s Mass with the Central City Civic Chorus in New York City. In addition,Coid has been the Alto soloist in many J.S. Bach's cantata performances throughout New York City. In addition Coid performed for six seasons with Fredrick Renz and New York’s Ensemble for Early Music. He was counter-tenor soloist for the Kennedy Center's tenth anniversary production of Leonard Bernstein's Mass on PBS-TV. He was the violin and countertenor soloist for Lincoln Center's production of Twelfth Night, broadcast nationwide on "Live from Lincoln Center."
Marshall Coid’s operatic roles include the Witch in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel with Prince William Symphony, Demtrius/Secrecy/Summer in Purcell’s The Fairy Queen with Ithaca Opera/Ballet, Second Spirit in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with Connecticut Grand Opera and he covered Hegai in Weisgall’s Esther with New York City Opera. Mr. Coid recently received critical acclaim for multiple roles in The Center for Contemporary Opera’s premiers of Westergard’s Alice in Wonderland and Salzman’s The Last True Words of Dutch Schultz.
Since the inception of The Queen's Chamber Band (QCB) in 1996 (or 1992), Marshall Coid has served as Counter-tenor Soloist Composer-In-Residence contributing 7 vocal and chamber works for QCB’s annual New York City series under commission from HU, including his Vampire Cantata, String Quartet in One Movement, Harpsichord Concerto and CityScape.. The Oak Ridge Symphony, New York Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra & Odyssey Chamber Players among others have also performed his concert music. 1991: Lincoln Center commissions Coid to create In Deep for the LC Out of Doors Festival. He arranges music for LC Theatre's production of The Philadelphia Story. 1993: Broadway director Tom O'Horgan stages Coid's opera The Bundle Man (Downtown Music Productions commission) at Theatre for the New City. Coid wins critical acclaim both for score & performance in title role. 1998: Coid wins Goliard Ensemble's Annual Composer Residency, taking him throughout the Eastern US as performer & teacher of composition & voice. 2000: Whitman Cantata wins Dessoff Choirs' 75th Anniversary Invitational Composers Competition & premiers in Alice Tully Hall.
Maarsall Coid's extensive theatrical experience includes scoring &/or serving as musical director for Soho Rep, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Circle Rep, Jewish Rep, Oxford University, John Jay College, Belgium International Performers Festival & 4 productions for Repertorio Espanol.. His musical theatre piece Here On This Hill won presentations at Emerging Artists Theatre, New York Cityin 2007 & Chicago Stages Musical Theatre Festival in 2008. Coid's dance scores include several collaborations with Catherine Tharin, drawing on their shared experiences with Erick Hawkins. Tharin was one of Hawkins' solo dancers and Coid has performed as violin soloist for the Hawkins company for almost two decades. Together they carry forward Hawkins' esthetic that mandates dance with live music as sine qua non. In collaboration with the stilt ballet duo Friends in High Places, Coid created The Tangoed Web, performed by Downtown Music Productions and Quintet of the Americas.
Marshall Coid's concert music has been performed by the New York Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Helios, Odyssey Chamber Players, Infusion, Rosewood Chamber Ensemble, The Queen's Chamber Band and the Oak Ridge Symphony. The Craftsbury Chamber Players have performed his music and presented him in composition master-classes in their Summer Youth Program. He appears annually on the Diller-Quaille School's "Rug Concerts" Series and each year composes a new finale piece for Young Audiences.
Marshall Coid continues his on-going relationship with the award-winning Repertorio Español as a composer and Musical Director of four productions to date. Currently he performs as the onstage violin soloist for the Broadway production of Chicago. In May of 2010, Harpsichord Unlimited presented a concert of Marshall Coid's music in the annual New Music for tThe Queen's Chamber Bandconcert, marking the end of the concert season. Under Coidl's direction, The Queen's Chamber Band and guest artists performed Dance Sonata for Solo Violin (with solo dancer from Erick Hawkins Company; String Quartet; City-Scape; Tempest Songs; and,Vampire Cantata.
Marshall Coid’s extensive discography includes The Queen's Chamber Band Soloists’ award winning (Chamber Music America Record of the Year 2002) CD of Dowland songs, Passionate Pavans and Galliards and the newly released Albany Records DVD of Westergard’s Alice in Wonderland as well as dozens of PBS TV and film soundtrack recordings. |
