Nanette Canfield (Soprano)

Born: USA

The American soprano and teacher, Nanette Canfield, earned her Bachelor of music degree from Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music and her Master of Music degree from Indiana University.

Nanette Canfield has extensive performance experience in a wide variety of musical genres including opera, oratorio, sacred music, art song, chamber music, and music theatre. She has portrayed a wide variety of roles in opera and musical theatre ranging from the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute to the title role in Little Mary Sunshine. In addition she has performed soprano solos in many standard works of the choral/orchestral repertoire from George Frideric Handel's Messiah to Orff's Carmina Burana. The music of contemporary composers is among her particular interests, and she has collaborated with such composers as Krzysztof Penderecki, Lukas Foss, John Corigliano, Daniel Pinkham, Joseph Schwantner, Christopher Butterfield, and Loris Chobanian on performances of their works. works and was recently featured in a performance of Lukas Foss's Time Cycle with the composer conducting.

Nanette Canfield has appeared in recital and concert in performance venues throughout the Great Lakes Region, and has created roles in several world premier productions in the USA and Canada. She has appeared as soloist with, among others, the Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Opera, Lyric Opera Cleveland, Lansing Lyric Opera, Cleveland New Music Associates, Robert Page Cleveland Singers, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony, Mansfield Symphony, Johnstown Symphony, and on the Baldwin-Wallace College Bach Festival and the Banff Arts Festival.

Nanette Canfield makes her home in Cleveland, Ohio where she teaches voice and singers' diction at the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music. She also serves as as Assistant Director of The Conservatory. Her students have been accepted for graduate work at some of the foremost music schools in the country, and many have gone on to enjoy successful careers as performing musicians, music educators, and music therapists.

Nanette Canfield is currently the soprano soloist at the historic Church of the Covenant in Cleveland, and is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Opera America, The College Music Society, The Contemporary Recording Society, and The American Music Center. She has recorded new music for voice on the CRS label (1999).
