Scott Brunscheen (Tenor)

Born: Des Moines, Iowa, USA

The American tenor, Scott J. Brunscheen, obtained his Bachelor og Music degree in Voice Performance from University of Utah (2004-2008); and his Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Roosevelt University (2008-2010). He has been a finalist and prize winner in the Oratorio Society of New York, Handel Aria Competition, Grand Rapids Keller Bach Award, and American Prize in Opera.

Scott Brunscheen has sung at La Musica Lirica (June-July 2006), Opera New Jersey (June-August 2010); Chicago Symphony Orchestra (September 2010- May 2012: Member of Chicago Symphony Chorus), Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (April-June 2012), Candid Concert Opera (December 2011-December 2013), Bel Canto Young Artists at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts (June 2011-Aug 2015), Long Beach Opera (January 2016), Chicago Opera Theater (March 2010-March 2016), Lyric Opera of Chicago (August 2012-March 2016: Tenor Chorus Member), Lyric Opera of Chicago (September 2011-November 2014), Madison Opera (October 2013-April 2016), Chicago Fringe Opera (September 2015-March 2017: General Manager, Founder), Haymarket Opera Company (September 2015-June 2018).

Scott Brunscheen’s “sweet and substantial lyric tenor” (Chicago Tribune) has garnered acclaim throughout the country in Baroque, classical, and contemporary repertoire. His recent performances of Haydn’s L’isola disabitata, Marais’ Ariane et Bachus, and Cesti’s L’Orontea with Haymarket Opera received praise from Opera News, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, and many others.

Recent concert and operatic engagements have included the world premiere of Stewart Copeland’s The Invention of Morel at Chicago Opera Theater, W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with Madison Opera, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen at Long Beach Opera, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem with Chicago Chorale and Haydn’s The Creation at DuPage University. He has also performed in Purcell’s The Fairy Queen at Chicago Opera Theater, Francis Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites and Donizetti’s La Favorite at the Caramoor Bel Canto Festival, Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw and The Rape of Lucretia with Chicago Fringe Opera, and Rossini’s La Cenerentola with Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Lyric Unlimited program.

As a young artist, Scott Brunscheen understudied and performed in Donizetti's La Fille du Regiment, Puccini’s Tosca, and Heggie's Dead Man Walking (Madison Opera); Glass’ The Fall of the House of Usher, Mose in Egitto, Giasone, and Die Zauberflote (Chicago Opera Theater); Chin’s Alice in Wonderland and Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd (Opera Theater of St. Louis); Rossini’s Guillaume Tell, Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia (Caramoor Bel Canto Festival); Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and La Cenerentola and W.A. Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Candid Concert Opera); and W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni with Opera New Jersey.

Outside of his work in opera, Scott Brunscheen has been the tenor soloist for multiple J.S. Bach cantatas, Orff’s Carmina Burana, George Frideric Handel's The Messiah and Judas Maccabaeus, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Magnificat, J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) and St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Ottorino Respighi's Lauda per la Nativita, Donizetti's Miserere, Rossini's Stabat Mater, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, B. Britten's Serenade and Canticles, Camille Saint-Saëns' Oratorio de Noël, Stainer's The Crucifixion, and Dubois' Seven Last Words.

Scott Brunscheen was Adjunct Professor: Voice at Central College in Pella, Iowa (August 2018-May 2019). He is currently Adjunct Professor: Voice at Drake University (since August 2018) and lives in Des Moines, Iowa with his husband and their dog.
