The American teacher-conductor and contralto, Corie Brown, has been singing since childhood; she also grew up playing the flute and performing with community choirs. After high school, she studied music education at Alma College. She taught high school choir in Michigan for a few years before heading to the south side of Chicago to teach K-8 music. From 2012 to 2014, she worked with the national music organization, Fundación Batuta in Colombia. Building musical communities throughout Colombia, Batuta is based on Venezuela’s El Sistema, and is aimed at ensuring quality music education for all. In 2014, she returned to the USA for graduate studies at the University of Oregon and obtained there her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting with Dr. Sharon Paul. Since 2016, she is pursuing a doctorate in Choral Conducting and Literature at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Corie Brown brings over nine years of teaching experience to the podium, and currently conducts the CU Women’s Chorus. She has worked at Interlochen Arts Camp, taught in Chicago Public Schools, and throughout Michigan. She sang with the Oregon Bach Festival for three seasons, and toured Europe, Argentina, and Colombia. She performed in an intergenerational women’s chorus with her mentor, Dr. Andrea Ramsey at Carnegie Hall. She joined the staff of the Ad Astra Music Festival in July 2018 as Festival Manager. |
