Donna Breitzer (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: February 14, 1979 - Saratoga, California, USA

The American mezzo-soprano and arts administrator, Donna Bareket Breitzer, earned both a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Michigan (1997-2002), as well as a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music (2003-2005).

Donna Breitzer enjoys a varied career as a singer, voice teacher and arts administrator in New York City. Recent performance highlights include solo appearances with the American Classical Orchestra, the Nashoba Valley Chorale and the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra; and recitals for the American Society of Jewish Music, the Art Song at Old Stone House series in Brooklyn, and the Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County. A member of the Extra Chorus of The Metropolitan Opera since 2014, she has also performed solo roles with several New York City opera companies including Dicapo Opera Theatre, dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, and Opera Manhattan, among others.

An active ensemble singer, Donna Breitzer performs regularly with top professional groups including the Bard Festival Chorale, New York Virtuoso Singers and Concert Chorale of New York, alongside distinguished orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra and the American Classical Orchestra, among others. She has appeared as a guest artist with acclaimed vocal ensemble The Western Wind, as well as in concert as featured soloist with the St. George's Choral Society, Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra, Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus, Big Apple Baroque, and the Zamir Chorale, among others. She is also a regular member of the acclaimed Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola of Antioch Episcopal Church in New York City.

Donna Breitzer was praised by the New York Times for offering “solid work” and by Opera News for singing “strongly and with character” in her role as Assunta in The Saint of Bleecker Street with Dicapo Opera, where she was a Resident Artist from 2010-2012. She has participated as an Apprentice Artist with Bel Canto at Caramoor, and spent two summers at the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv. She has performed with American Lyric Theater (New York City), Opera Providence, American Repertory Theater (Boston, Massachusetts) and the Encore Theatre Company in Jerusalem, and is a former member of the Handel and Haydn Society’s Educational Outreach Quartet based in Boston.

Donna Breitzer has enjoyed teaching private voice lessons for nearly 20 years, and currently maintains a teaching studio in New York City. She is also the co-founder (baritone Jesse Blumberg baritone Jesse Blumberg) and Executive Director of Five Boroughs Music Festival (since July 2007), a chamber music presenting organization in New York City. In addition, SHE has worked as Legal Department Assistant at Brooks Brothers (August 2007-March 2009); US Marketing Coordinator at Rouse in New York City (March 2009-May 2013). She currently resides in Park Slope, Brooklyn with her husband, Cantor Joshua Breitzer, and their sons Jonah and Gideon.
