The Greek-American baritone, Evan Bravos, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Lawrence University (2006-2011); and his Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Northwestern University (2011-2013), where he first studied with Karen Brunssen. In April 2013, he sang at The J.F. Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. representing Northwestern University in The Conservatory Project, an arts initiative designed to showcase young musical artists from the best music schools across America.
Recent roles include: Figaro in The Barber of Seville with Lyric Opera of Chicago’s “Opera in the Neighborhoods” (September-November 2013); Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath the Chicago premiere; Sid in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring; Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus; Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief; Martin in Leonard Bernstein's Candide and Fisherman in B. Britten's Peter Grimes. Other partial roles include: Malatesta in Don Pasquale Belcore in L’Elisir D’amore. He has been Young Artist at Aspen Music Festival and School (June-August 2013); Apprentice Artist at Central City Opera, Colorado (since 2014; Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (Family matinee performance), Prison Guard 2 in Dead Man Walking, Sam (cover) in L. Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, Herr Zeller in Sound of Music); Emerging Artist with Virginia Opera (since 2015-2016 season). He has been Studio Artist at Opera Santa Barbara, California (2016-2017); Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (2017-2018); Sarasota Opera, Florida (January-March 2019; Papageno Cover, Count Gil Cover, Gasparo Cover);
Concert works include: MacMillan's St. John Passion, Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, J.S. Bach's and Felix Mendelssohn's Magnificats, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Haydn's Mass in Time of War, Copland's Old American Songs, Georges Bizet's Au font du temple saint (from The Pearl Fishers), Johannes Brahms' Requiem, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel. Symphony credits: Lake Geneva, Manitowoc, Fox Valley, and Elgin Symphonies, the Elgin Youth Symphony, Janesville Choral Union and Soli Deo Gloria’s "Chicago Bach Project". He sings regularly at St. James Episcopal Cathedral of Chicago (since September 2011), and is also a regular member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus (since September 2013).
The Chicago Tribune acclaims Evan Bravos to have been "splendid as the hot-tempered parolee Tom Joad, whose strong singing and acting marked him as a young talent to watch." Upcoming concert engagements include the Ralph Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs (Christ Hundred Christiana Church, Wilmington, Delaware) and Gabriel Fauré's Requiem with the Colorado Symphony Chorus in Paris, Strasbourg, and Munich, under the direction of Duain Wolfe.
Evan Bravos has been on the Voice Faculty at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin (September 2013-2015); Voice Fellow at Ravinia's Steans Music Institute in Highland Park, Illinois (August 2018); Vocal Fellow at Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California (since June 2019). He resides in Chicago and and enjoys singing frequently in and around the Chicago area. |
