The Spanish counter-tenor, Christian Borrelli (Christian Gil-Borrelli, Christian Gil Borrelli), began his musical career at the University of Santiago de Compostela, where he studied Medicine and Surgery as part of various groups on the local music scene. After specializing in Public Health, he set aside his career as a doctor to dedicate himself full time to music in 2016. He entered the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid, where he studied with Cristina Gallardo-Domâs, Pilar Pérez-Íñigo and the repertorist Cristina Presmanes. He finally settles in Germany to study with the mezzo-soprano María José Montiel at the prestigious Universität der Künste Berlin. In addition, he has received vocal training from other counter-tenors such as Xavier Sabata or Philippe Jaroussky and has received musical interpretation classes from conductors such as Alberto Zedda, Eduardo López Banzo or Miquel Ortega. He has been awarded the 1st Prize of the Compostela Lírica Contest (2020), the 2nd prize of the Medinacelli International Singing Competition (2019). In 2021 he has been part of the first generation of CRESCENDO, a project led by the Teatro Real Madrid that supports promising young singers in their budding musical career and receives the SALVAT BECA BACH scholarship.
During this brief period, Christian Borrelli has managed to become one of the most promising Spanish counter-tenors of his generation. He has offered recitals and concerts at festivals and theaters throughout Spain, such as the Teatro Real in Madrid, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Programación Lírica de la Coruña, Palacio de Festivales de Santander, Auditorio Alfredo Kraus de Gran Canaria, Auditorio de Galicia, FIOCLE and SMR de Cuenca. Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, among many others. He has played leading roles in Baroque opera and oratorio, such as Alessandro or Solomon (George Frideric Handel), Holofernes (Antonio Vivaldi) or Orfeo (Gluck) and from the orchestral and symphonic repertoire such as Magnificat in D major BWV 243 (J.S. Bach),
Carmina Burana (Orff) or Chichester Psalms (Leonard Bernstein). In addition, he has created the antagonistic role of the contemporary opera María Soliña. Internationally, He has performed at the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona, Bachfest Leipzig or BRQ Vantaa Festival in Helsinki. He has performed with groups such as Al Ayre Español, the Real Filharmonia de Galicia, Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra, Bachcelona Consort, among others, being conducted by the batons of Eduardo López-Banzo, Gottfried von der Goltz, Rafael Sánchez-Araña, Manel Valdivieso, etc.
Very active in the contemporary art scene, Christian Borrelli has created different musical and performance projects together with other artists such as the Spanish painter and designer Okuda San Miguel, the Californian filmmaker Isabelle Carbonell or the Austrian visual artist Ines Doujak. Trained as a specialist in Public Health and a PhD in Health Sciences, thanks to his research for action in health, gender and diversity, he has been able to give his works a social and scientific perspective. Projects like KASHMIRI, based on the life and work of LGBT composers, or Orfeo + Euridice, a review of Gluck's opera from the perspective of gender violence, highlight his artistic production. He currently lives in Berlin, Germany. |
