Andrew Bogard (Bass-Baritone)

Born: Ohio, USA

The American bass-baritone and photographer, Andrew Bogard, studied at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he graduated with distinction (2005-2007). In addition to voice, he has studied cello, double bass, clarinet and classical guitar. He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Voice/Music from The Juilliard School of Music in New York (2007-2011); and his Master of Music degree in Opera from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he was a student of Marlena Malas (2011-2015). He won first place in the 2014 Mario Lanza Scholarship Competition, second place and audience choice in the 2015 Cooper-Bing Opera Columbus Competition, and was a Mid-Atlantic regional finalist and encouragement award recipient in the 2015 MET Competition.

Andrew Bogard's opera credits include performances with Opera Philadelphia (2012-2016) as Dottore Grenvil in Verdi's La Traviata, the First Priest/Second Armored Guard in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Maestro in Golijov's Ainadamar, as The Abbott in Benjamin Britten's Curlew River with Ballet Opera Pantomime (Montreal), as Nick Shadow in Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Alidoro in Rossini's La Cenerentola, Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore, Spencer Coyle in B. Britten's Owen Wingrave, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte. At Julliard School, he performed the roles of Peter Quince in B. Britten's Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cousin Brandon in Paul Hindemith’s Long Christmas Dinner. At Curtis Opera Theatre. he performed the roles of Dr. Reischmann in Henze's Elegy for Young Lovers, Mephistopheles in Charles Gounod's Faust, Capello in I Capuletti e i Montecchi, and Argante in George Frideric Handel's Rinaldo. In summers at the Chautauqua Music Festival, he sang the roles of Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Simone in Gianni Schicchi, Leporello in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Reverend Hale in The Crucible, and Colline in La Boheme and Bartolo in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. In summer 2015, he performed with Festival d'Aix-en-Provence as part of their Mozart Residency.

An avid oratorio and symphonic singer, Andrew Bogard'sa performances include Jesus in J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with Mendelssohn Club Chorus of Philadelphia and Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia (February 2015), bass soloist in G.F. Handel's Messiah with the Park Avenue Chamber Orchestra and Marion Civic Orchestra (November 2012), and Raphael/Adam in J. Haydn's The Creation with Symphony in C and the Mendelssohn Club Chorus of Philadelphia.

As an Emerging Artist with Opera Philadelphia, Andrew Bogard sang the Doctor in La Traviata, and as a Young Artist at Palm Beach Opera (November 2015-March 2016), he sang the Lakai and Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos. In summer 2016 (May-August 2016), he joined Santa Fe Opera as an Apprentice Artist singing Nicholas in Samuel Barber's Vanessa and covering Leporello in Don Giovanni. Last season, he joined Washington National Opera's Young Artist Program, where he sang the title role in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, and sang a critically acclaimed Leporello in Don Giovanni.

Upcoming engagements include Andrew's first Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflote with CoOperative in Princeton, New Jersey, and as the bass soloist in G.F. Handel's Messiah with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. He currently lives in Washington, D.C.
