The American soprano and educator, Susan Belling, studied at the Roslyn High' School. Long Island. New York (1956-1960), Chatham Square Music School
(1958-1960), Kathryn Long School (1965-1967), Metropolitan Opera Studio (1964-1967), and Manhattan School of Music (1960-1963).
Susan Belling has participated in over 100 American and world premieres; played title role in Reimann's Melusine for Santa Fe Opera and Kirchner's Lily with New York City Opera. She performed Arnold Schoenberg's Second Quartet with Erich Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Belinda in Dido and Aeneas in Metropolitan Opera's Premiere Season of the Forum Opera at Lincoln Center. She has performed numerous occasions with conductor James Levine in such roles as Zerlina in Don Giovanni at Hollywood Bowl, Papagena in Magic Flute with Cleveland Concert Associates, as soprano soloist in Midsummer Night's Dream and the Gustav Mahler's Founh Symphony with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Marriage of Figaro. She made her debut in Europe at the Baroque Festival of Venetian Music, Castelfranco, Veneto and Teatro Olimico in Italy in 1977. Numerous other performances include, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass with Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Neville Marriner, Pamina in Magic Flute and numerous others. In 1979 she performed at the Baldwin-Wallace College Bach Festival.
Susan Belling has given master-classes and workshops at Stanford University. California (1978), University of Houston (1978), Manhattan School of Music (1984), and the Faculty of New School of Social Research (since 1986).
He honours include: Rockefeller Foundation (1963, 1964, 1965); William Matheus Sullivan Foundation (1964 and 1965); Minna Kaufman Ruud Foundation (1961-1964); National Arts and Letters Club award (1962); Manhattan School of Music Scholarship (1960-1963), Metropolitan Opera Studio Scholarship (1964-1967). |
