The Slovak baritone, Dominik Belavy, received his Bachelor of Music degree at The Juilliard School of Music in New York (since 2013). He is in his final year as a Master of Music candidate at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Sanford Sylvan, where he is a Toulmin Scholar. At Juilliard, he has been featured as Thomas Bouche in Weill’s Down in the Valley, L’horloge Comtoise and L'arbre in Ravel’s L’enfant et les Sortilèges and Conte Perruchetto in Haydn’s La fedeltà premiata and has covered Kuligin in Janáček’s Kàt’a Kabanovà, Nardo in W.A. Mozart’s La finite giardiniera and Presto in Francis Poulenc’s Les mamelles des Tirésias.
Dominik Belavy recently made his hometown and professional debut as Jim Larkens in La faniculla del West at Michigan Opera Theatre under the baton of Stephen Lord. He then debuted as a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of St. Louis as Yakuside in Madame Butterfly and Constable and Trucker Joe in The Grapes of Wrath. He recently returned to the Tanglewood Music Center to sing Junior in Leonard Bernstein’s A Quiet Place under the baton of Stefan Asbury.
On the recital stage, Dominik Belavy has been featured on the BBC in Drums and Guns, a staged recital commemorating the Irish uprising of 1916, curated by Iain Burnside. He recently sang performances of Ben Moore’s Ode to a Nightingale with pianist Brian Zeger at National Sawdust and Alice Tully Hall. He was recently featured on WQXR’s Midday Masterpiece broadcast singing Debussy’s Le promenoir des deux amants. Recent performances also include Ravel’s Chansons Madecasses, Histoires Naturelles, Haas' Ctyri pisne na slova cinske poesie, Chanler's Eight Epitaphs and Samuel Barber’s Despite and Still. Last season, he sang selections from Schwanengesang in an event honoring Thomas Adès at The Juilliard School.
At Juilliard, Dominik Belavy was also featured in a live-stream master-class lead by Yannick Nézet-Séguin singing scenes from W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni. Dominik has participated in master-classes and residencies at Juilliard with Christian Gerhaher, Barbara Hannigan and Roger Vignoles. He was also featured in NYFOS at Juilliard’s celebration of John Corigliano and William Bolcom. He will make his second appearance in the school’s Wednesday at One series in Alice Tully Hall singing the songs of Charles Ives. With Juilliard415, Dominik has sung J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor (BWV 232) under the baton of Ton Koopman.
Dominik Belavy attended the Tanglewood Music Center as a fellow in 2016 and 2017 where he sang J.S. Bach's Nur jedem das Seine and Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen under the baton of John Harbison. He also premiered a portion of Alan Smith’s The Other Side of the Door and sang a portion of Arnold Schoenberg’s arrangement of Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. At Tanglewood’s Festival of Contemporary Music, he sang in the premiere of Nathan Davis’s The Sand Reckoner with Jacob Greenberg. Mr. Belavy also sang with Dawn Upshaw and Stephanie Blythe in a concert honoring Ella Fitzgerald curated by Lee Musiker. He currently lives in New York City. |
