Today’s orchestra of the Beethoven Hall was founded in Koblenz in 1897 and was taken over by the city of Bonn in 1906, ten years later. With the construction of the Beethoven Hall in 1963, the ensemble got its actual name: Beethoven Orchester Bonn, bearing, of course, the name of the famous Bonn son: Ludwig van Beethoven..
The Orchestra, whose name is well-known all over the world, has a long tradition in Bonn. Many meaningful composers and conductors can be found in the Orchestra’s history, which is more than 100-years-old, such as Max Reger, Karl Böhm and Sergiu Celibidache. Stefan Blunier is General Musical Director of the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn since August 2008.
The Beethoven Orchester Bonn is one of the leading German orchestras and makes an important contribution to the city’s cultural life with its concerts in the Beethoven Hall and the opera of Bonn. The Orchestra is the musical “ambassador” of Bonn. It promotes Bonn successfully with its concerts in Germany and in other countries and its CD recordings. The orchestra with its 106 members contributes in an important way to the artistic success of the Beethoven Festivals, which have taken place since 1927. |
