The Portuguese baritone, André Baleiro, was barely 10 years old when he began his musical education at the à Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa (Gregorian Institute of Lisbon), where he maintained an intense activity in the field choral music. In 2004, in the same institute, he began his vocal training with Elsa Cortez. He studies choral conducting and music education at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. He is currently studying singing at the Universität der Künste in Berlin in the class of Professor Kammersänger Siegfried Lorenz with scholarship from the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation). In 2012 won the 2nd prize at the 6th Concurso de Canto Lírico da Fundação Rotária Portuguesa (Lyrical Singing Competition of the Portuguese Foundation) and an award from the Walter & Charlotte Hamel Stiftung foundation in Hannover.
From 2008 André Baleiro regularly collaborates with the Gulbenkian Choir. He has performed on several stages in Europe, including Portugal, France, Switzerland, Germany and Spain as well as in Japan. He made his solo oratorio in the Mass brevis in G major, KV 140 by W.A. Mozart, at the Festival Musicales de Grillon in 2009 in France. In the concert "Young Portuguese Composers" 2010 edition, he was a soloist in the premiere of Díptico by Miguel Teixeira, with Sinfonietta orchestra. Also in 2010, he was soloist in Dixit Dominus by George Frideric Handel under the direction of the conductor Michel Corboz at the Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian. He has also sung Peer Gynt by Grieg at Festival ao Largo (Teatro Nacional de São Carlos), German Requiem by Johannes Brahms at the the Salle Métropole in Lausanne, and Gabriel Fauré's Requiem at La Folle Journée Festival in Nantes and in Tokyo.
In 2007, André Baleiro played the role of Apollo and Titye in the opera La descente d'Orphée aux enfers by M.A. Charpentier at Couvent de Mafra, Portugal. In 2011 he made his opera debut with the role of the Caporale in Il Cappelo di paglia di Firenze by Nino Rota at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon. In 2011, he starred in the premiere of the recent opera ainda não te-vi as mãos (I have not seen your hands) by Edward Luiz Ayres d’Abreu at the Teatro Sá da Bandeira in Santarém, Portugal. He has also sung Pantalone in Turandot by Ferruccio Busoni; Don Parmenione in L’occasione fa il Ladro by Rossini at Teatro Peréz Galdós in Las Palmas in March 2013. |
