Atlanta Schola Cantorum, founded in 1974, is the area's oldest independent chorus. The choir presents two or three sets of concerts each year in the Atlanta area. The core of their repertory is the polyphonic sacred music of the Renaissance, especially Josquin, Palestrina, Victoria, Tallis, and Byrd. The have offered the first local performances of Hildegard von Bingen (in the mid-1970's) and early Spanish music from the Las Huelgas Codex and Llibre Vermell, and they have reached forward to Monteverdi, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Hans Leo Hassler, Aichinger, and J.S. Bach. Like many early music choruses, they feel an affinity with such contemporary composers as Pärt, Tavener, and Lauridsen. They have also performed in Charleston as part of the Piccolo Spoleto choral series for several years. |
"Such depth of expression - a fusion of harmonies and texts - was the hallmark of the singers throughout the concert. In three languages, Latin, English and French, their diction remained clear ... the group’s overall vitality and intelligence carried every piece." - Pierre Ruhe, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (May 8, 2006) |
